Two Campuses, One Mission, Elevating The Quality of Education Through Research Collabortion and Digital Learning

Semarang, October 6, 2025 – Two major Indonesian universities, Universitas Islam Negeri (UIN) Walisongo Semarang and Universitas Terbuka (UT), have officially forged a strategic collaboration to strengthen the quality of higher education and research. The signing of the Cooperation Agreement (PKS) and Implementation Arrangement (IA) between the Faculty of Education and Teacher Training (FITK) of UIN Walisongo and the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) of UT was held on Monday (October 6, 2025) at the Dean’s Building of FITK, UIN Walisongo, Semarang.

This partnership marks a concrete step for both institutions in reinforcing the implementation of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education—education, research, and community service—as well as promoting the development of competencies for educators and prospective teachers who are adaptive in the digital era.

“This is not merely a signing, but a crucial moment to expand the academic network and deliver learning that is relevant to the challenges of the times,” said Prof. Dr. Ucu Rahayu, M.Sc., Dean of FKIP UT. She affirmed that through this synergy, both institutions are committed to developing an innovative, collaborative, and sustainable teacher education model.

Meanwhile, Prof. Dr. Fatah Syukur, M.Ag., Dean of FITK UIN Walisongo, views this collaboration as uniting two complementary strengths: UT with its inclusive and modern distance learning system, and FITK with its strong academic tradition and Islamic values.

“This synergy will foster a collaboration that is not only academic but also meaningful for the community. We want the results to be tangible, impactful, and sustainable,” he expressed.

The scope of the cooperation covers joint research, speaker exchange, training to improve the quality of digital learning, and the development of adaptive, technology-based curricula. Implementation activities will commence immediately through guest lectures, seminars, and collaborative inter-campus research projects.

Drs. Moh. Muzammil, M.M., Director of UT Semarang, asserted that this collaboration will not stop on paper. “We want to ensure this cooperation becomes a platform for the birth of innovation and scholarly publications that truly contribute to improving the quality of education in Indonesia,” he stated.

More than just an institutional partnership, this step is also aligned with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4: Quality Education. The collaboration between UIN Walisongo and UT supports the global mission to expand inclusive access to higher education, enhance the competence of educators, and introduce innovation in learning methods.

This synergy between a university rooted in Islamic values and a pioneer of distance learning reflects the reality that educational transformation demands cross-boundary collaboration. Both institutions are committed to providing education that is not only intellectual but also humane—encouraging the younger generation to become lifelong learners of integrity who care about sustainable development.

The initiative by Universitas Terbuka and UIN Walisongo is expected to inspire other educational institutions to build strategic partnerships to strengthen national education quality, broaden access to learning, and establish a more open and collaborative research ecosystem.
