South Tangerang, 10 September 2025 – Universitas Terbuka (UT) Serang once again carved out a proud milestone by graduating 436 new bachelor’s degree holders at a commencement ceremony held at Universitas Terbuka Convention Center (UTCC), Pondok Cabe, on Wednesday (10/9). Thousands of invited guests, parents, and families filled the tribunes since morning to give their best support and prayers to the graduates. A warm and emotional atmosphere enveloped the hall as one by one, the graduates’ names were called and they were officially inaugurated as new degree holders.

The pride was not only reflected in the number of graduates, but also in the inspiring stories that emerged from this campus. One of them is Sugiri Adi, who, with unyielding spirit, successfully completed his studies and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in English Literature specializing in Translation at the age of 77. Amid the loud applause of the audience, his presence became a true symbol that the pursuit of knowledge knows no age limit. Sugiri’s story reminds us that Universitas Terbuka truly opens the doors of education for all, regardless of age, background, or life circumstances.
The Director of UT Serang, Dr. Teguh Prakoso, S.Pd., M.Hum., expressed his gratitude and pride. “This is a proud moment as well as a challenge. To this day, UT Serang alumni have reached nearly 16,000, spread across various regions, making real contributions to society. I also invite our graduates to continue their studies at the Master’s level at Universitas Terbuka, so that this spirit of learning continues,” he said.
Acting Vice Rector I for Academic Affairs, Prof. Rahmat Budiman, S.S., M.Hum., Ph.D., in his remarks emphasized that graduation is not the end of the journey, but rather the beginning of greater service. “We extend our highest appreciation to the graduates and their families. May the knowledge you have gained become a light for your work, bring benefits to society, and uphold the good name of Universitas Terbuka,” he stated.
This graduation ceremony is also a clear depiction of how the Distance Learning (PJJ) system implemented by UT provides enormous benefits for society. With its flexibility, more affordable costs, and digital technology support, UT becomes a solution for those facing challenges in pursuing higher education at conventional universities. Communities in remote areas, full-time workers, homemakers, and those with family responsibilities can still pursue education without having to abandon their daily obligations. Even those of advanced age are still given the opportunity to learn, as exemplified by Sugiri Adi.
This learning model not only provides opportunities but also builds public confidence that higher education is not the exclusive right of a privileged few, but a right for all citizens. Through the principle of lifelong learning, UT has proven itself as a university that delivers real benefits: opening opportunities, elevating social dignity, and expanding access to employment and personal development.
The UT Serang graduation also aligns with Universitas Terbuka’s commitment to supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially SDG 4: Quality Education and SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities. UT ensures that everyone, regardless of their circumstances, can access inclusive, equitable, and sustainable quality higher education. The presence of UT in society is a real manifestation of a state distance university committed to advancing the nation’s education while bringing broad social impact.
With high spirits, hundreds of new UT Serang graduates walked out of the commencement hall today, carrying hopes, prayers, and new determination. They are living proof that Universitas Terbuka is not merely a place to pursue knowledge, but also a space of hope for those striving for a better future—regardless of age, location, or limitations faced.
