UT Daerah News – UT Jayapura Strengthen Education Access in Papua

Serui, 22 September 2025 – Universitas Terbuka (UT) Jayapura, through its Universitas Terbuka Service Center (SALUT) Serui, held a meeting with the Acting Head of the Education and Culture Office of Yapen Regency, Chisson Haris Merani. The meeting, which took place at the office of the Education and Culture Office of Yapen Islands Regency, aimed to discuss the expansion of access to higher education. In addition, the quality of educators in Yapen Islands was also a major topic of discussion at the event.

“This activity is useful for strengthening the quality of human resources (HR), especially teachers and educators in the region,” said the Manager of Marketing and Registration for Universitas Terbuka Jayapura, Teguh Nursantoso.

This activity was not just a forum for building relationships, but also a concrete step to encourage the improvement of teacher competency and expand access to higher education. This is in line with UT’s mission as a university with a flexible distance learning system, which can address the geographical challenges in the Yapen Islands region, which consists of many districts and island areas.

Through UT’s distance learning system, geographical barriers are no longer an obstacle. UT’s learning system prioritizes flexibility and independence, where students can access learning materials anytime and anywhere according to their needs. In addition, UT’s learning method is also supported by various teaching materials, interactive modules, and tutorial guidance that facilitate the learning process without having to attend class schedules in person.

Through its UT Jayapura service office, UT is present to ensure that every teacher, whether in the city center or in a remote district, can continue their education to a higher level in an easier, more affordable, and more flexible way. UT’s commitment to ensuring the right of citizens to access higher education is also in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially SDG 4 (Quality Education), which emphasizes the importance of equitable, inclusive, and quality educational access for all. The presence of UT Jayapura in Yapen Islands can be a real contribution to supporting the national target of increasing education participation, as well as supporting the achievement of the SDGs in the field of human development.
