Access to higher education should not be determined by geographical location. However, for many people in Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT), distance and challenging regional conditions remain significant barriers to pursuing a university education. Driven by a shared commitment to providing more equitable learning opportunities, Universitas Terbuka (UT) Kupang and the Synod of the Evangelical Christian Church in Timor (GMIT) have strengthened their collaboration to expand access to quality higher education for communities across NTT.
The meeting was attended by UT Kupang Director Dr. Albert Gamot Malau, S.Si., M.Si.; GMIT Synod Vice Chair Rev. Saneb Y. Ena Blegur, S.Th.; and UT Kupang Manager of Outreach, Registration, and Examinations Yusinta N. Fina, S.Sos., M.Si. The discussion marked an important first step toward strengthening collaboration to broaden access to higher education in NTT through Universitas Terbuka’s open and distance learning system.
During the meeting, UT Kupang and the GMIT Synod explored various partnership opportunities, particularly those aimed at benefiting GMIT members and the wider community throughout NTT. Through UT’s flexible learning system, the collaboration is expected to provide broader educational opportunities without being constrained by distance, time, or work commitments.
UT Kupang Director Dr. Albert Gamot Malau emphasized that Universitas Terbuka remains committed to delivering accessible, flexible, and high-quality higher education for all. According to him, the partnership with the GMIT Synod represents a strategic initiative to expand educational access while supporting the development of human capital across Nusa Tenggara Timur Province.
This commitment aligns with the effort to promote equitable access to education, one of the objectives of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4: Quality Education, which seeks to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all. Through cross-institutional collaboration, access to higher education is expected to become increasingly available to communities throughout NTT, including those in remote areas.
GMIT Synod Vice Chair Rev. Saneb Y. Ena Blegur welcomed the collaboration, expressing optimism that the church’s extensive network across NTT would help bring meaningful educational opportunities to GMIT members and other community members seeking to pursue higher education.
As a public university operating under an open and distance learning system, Universitas Terbuka continues to strengthen partnerships with various stakeholders to ensure that educational services reach communities in even the most remote regions. The participation of Yusinta N. Fina, S.Sos., M.Si., in the meeting further underscored UT Kupang’s commitment to expanding educational access through partnership programs tailored to local community needs.
The collaboration also reflects the spirit of SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, which emphasizes the importance of cooperation among institutions in delivering sustainable solutions for society. The partnership between a higher education institution and a religious organization represents a concrete step toward strengthening equitable access to education throughout Nusa Tenggara Timur.
The meeting between UT Kupang and the GMIT Synod demonstrates that advancing education requires collective effort. The partnership is expected to create greater opportunities for the people of NTT to pursue quality higher education as a means of strengthening the region’s human capital and competitiveness.
