Doctorate of Management Generates Their 6th Doctor! Research on Sustainability of ASEAN Industries

On Wednesday, February 5, 2025, the Open Dissertation Examination for the Doctoral Program in Management Science at the Postgraduate School of Universitas Terbuka (SPS UT) was held for student, Tokit Masdiktok. This activity took place at the Rasamala Room, Wisma 2 Universitas Terbuka from 09.00 WIB to 12.00 WIB. 

The student from UT Bandung presented his dissertation entitled “The Influence of Sustainability on Company Performance Based on Industrial Sector Classification in ASEAN Companies Period 2013-2023.” 

The examination committee consisted of several academics and professionals in the field of Management. The open examination session was chaired by the Director of the Postgraduate School, Prof. Dr. Maman Rumanta, M.Si, and the Session Secretary by Dr. Andi Harmoko Arifin, S.E., M.Si. In addition, there was an external examiner I, Prof. Dr. Harjum Muharam, SE., ME. from Diponegoro University (UNDIP), external examiner II, Prof. Dr. Ali Muktiyanto, S.E., M.Si. from Universitas Terbuka, as well as a promoter team consisting of the chairman of the promoter, Prof. Dr. Tri Gunarsih, M.M. from the Yogyakarta Institute of Technology and co-promoter I, Dr. Ira Geraldina, S.E., Ak., M.S.Ak.,CA. from Universitas Terbuka, and co-promoter II, Dr. Ake Wihadanto, S.E., M.T. from Universitas Terbuka. 

In his remarks, the chairman of the promoter, Prof. Dr. Tri Gunarsih, M.M., said that the 1992 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) proclaimed at the Brazil Summit or the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), emphasized the importance of sustainability to address increasingly complex social, economic and environmental problems, especially those that could become an existential threat to planet earth. Sustainability practices in every country and scientific research on ESG are growing, including for the ASEAN region. The results of previous studies regarding the influence of ESG on company performance show a research gap, which includes; there are differences in research results regarding the influence of ESG on company performance, ESG research in developing countries including ASEAN can be considered still minimal, research on the entire ESG pillar completely is still rare. 

Also present at this event were several Universitas Terbuka officials, including the Deputy Director I for Academic Affairs of the Universitas Terbuka Postgraduate School, Ir. Kristanti Ambar Puspitasari M.Ed., Ph.D., Deputy Director II for Non-Academic Affairs, Dr. Shine Pintor Siolemba Patiro, S.T., M.M., and Martino Wibowo, S.E., M.Si., Ph.D., as Head of the Doctoral Program in Management Science at the Postgraduate School. 

The Open Examination Session was also attended by representatives from Langlangbuana University (UNLA), namely Dr. Gun Gunawan, R, S.E., M.M., Ak, C.A. (Dean of FEB), R. Ela Sulastri, S.E., M.Si. (Vice Dean 1 FEB), Sriwardani, S.E., M.M. (Vice Dean 2 FEB), Puti Harisa, S.E., M.M. (Vice Dean 3 FEB), Inne Satyawisudarini, S.E., M.M. (Head of Management Study Program FEB), and finally, Uswatun Hasanah, S.E., Ak., M.Ak. (Head of Accounting Study Program FEB). 

The research conducted is expected to have a significant positive influence on company performance as proxied in Return On Assets (ROA) and Price To Book Value (PBV). In addition, it provides a significant positive moderation on the influence of ESG on company performance.
