Tangerang Selatan – Universitas Terbuka (UT) recorded a significant achievement in the THE Sustainability Impact Ratings 2026, securing its strongest performance across five Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The university achieved its highest score in SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, ranking 201–300 globally. This was followed by SDG 4: Quality Education at 401–600, SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals at 601–800, SDG 5: Gender Equality at 401–600, and SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation at 401–600.
Based on data published on 24 June 2026, this achievement places UT within an increasingly competitive global ranking landscape. The THE Sustainability Impact Ratings 2026 assessed 1,603 universities from 116 countries/territories. The ranking evaluates universities’ contributions to all 17 SDGs, meaning UT’s performance reflects not only academic reputation but also institutional contributions to the global sustainable development agenda.
These five top-performing SDGs indicate that UT’s contribution is not concentrated in a single area. The university demonstrates strength in institutional governance, expansion of quality education access, partnership development, gender equality, and environmental sustainability. In the context of modern higher education, this reflects a reputation built not only on academic activities but also on broad public impact.
UT’s strongest performance in SDG 16 highlights the importance of institutional governance in building trust. As an open state university, UT continues to strengthen accountability, transparency, and service quality. This achievement is particularly relevant as higher education institutions are increasingly expected not only to produce graduates but also to serve as credible, open, and responsive institutions for society.
Meanwhile, performance in SDG 4 closely reflects UT’s core identity. Since its establishment, UT has been committed to expanding access to higher education for individuals who cannot follow conventional learning systems. Through its open and distance learning system, UT provides flexible learning opportunities for high school graduates, working professionals, teachers, civil servants, business actors, parents, and learners across diverse regions.
As a distance learning university, UT’s learning space is not limited to physical classrooms. It can take place through a laptop or mobile device after working hours, at a teacher’s home in a remote area, during family time, or within daily routines of individuals rebuilding their future. In such a system, higher education becomes more integrated into real life and more accessible to people of different ages, professions, regions, and socio-economic backgrounds.
These achievements contribute to UT’s significant leap in this year’s ranking. Overall, UT rose from the 1001–1500 global band in 2025 to 801–1000 in 2026. This increase also surpassed the target set in the university’s Strategic Plan (Renstra). UT’s overall score also improved from 51.8 in 2025 to 56.9 in 2026.
Another notable improvement is the increase in the number of SDGs participated in by UT. In 2025, UT engaged in five SDGs. In 2026, this number increased significantly to all 17 SDGs. This means UT is now actively contributing to the full spectrum of sustainable development goals, reflecting a more comprehensive institutional impact.
Recognition in the THE Sustainability Impact Ratings 2026 further strengthens UT’s position as an open university that builds its reputation through meaningful societal impact. In an era where flexible, credible, and high-quality higher education is increasingly needed, UT continues to stand as a relevant option for modern learners.
Ultimately, this achievement does not only place UT in a global ranking list. It also highlights a direction for higher education that is increasingly needed today: open, adaptive, closely connected to society, and capable of expanding opportunities. From both physical and digital spaces reaching across Indonesia’s vast archipelago, UT continues to redefine the university as a learning ecosystem that does not wait for students to come, but actively reaches those who are ready to grow and contribute to the future.
