New Rector’s Strategic Moves to Strengthen UT’s Academic Reputation Globally

Tangerang Selatan, 3 September 2025 – Universitas Terbuka (UT) held its first Leadership Coordination Meeting on Wednesday (9/3) at the Quality Hall, UT Pondok Cabe, South Tangerang. The meeting was led by the new Rector of UT for the 2025–2030 period, Prof. Dr. Ali Muktiyanto, S.E., M.Si., who outlined UT’s strategic steps toward becoming a global Open and Distance Higher Education (PTJJ) institution based on academic, learning, and graduate excellence.

In his remarks, Prof. Ali expressed his appreciation to the Directors of the Regional UT offices for providing excellent services, which led to UT being entrusted with serving over 750,000 students this semester. He emphasized that this quality must be maintained to fulfill the university’s original mandate of providing the widest possible access to higher education for the public.

For the next five years, Prof. Ali plans to implement strategic changes in both student learning facilitation and institutional governance to better prepare UT for the challenges of education in the digital age. This aligns with UT’s role in supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities), and SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions). By offering inclusive distance learning, UT not only opens up access to education for people across Indonesia but also strengthens its contribution to national and global sustainable development agendas.

The Rector concluded by stressing the importance of solid collaboration among all ranks and units. “I invite all UT leaders to synergize, innovate, and maintain the quality of educational services,” he affirmed, adding that UT will increasingly strengthen its role as an impactful university for the nation.
