UT Student Crowned as Champion Of Southeast Asia MTQ, Proof of ODL Shaping An Achieving Generation

Universitas Terbuka (UT) once again achieved a proud international accomplishment. Three UT students successfully won titles in the 2025 Southeast Asia International Musabaqah Tilawatil Qur’an Mahasiswa (MTQM). This event was held at the Balairung Building of Universitas Jambi (UNJA), Jambi Province, from June 16–19, 2025.

This brilliant achievement led UT to secure the title of 2nd Overall Champion, marking the consistency and quality of UT’s contingent in this prestigious international religious event. The three UT students who won titles are:

  • Muh. Fadhil Taswin (UT Majene) – 1st Place in Men’s Tartil Quran
  • Qemal Mulyawan (UT Palu) – 2nd Place in Men’s Qira’at Sab’ah
  • Muhammad Shahad Anuar Hasyim (UT Batam) – 3rd Place in Men’s Tilawatil Quran

The Director of UT Majene, Devi Ayuni, S.E., M.Si., expressed her pride in this achievement, emphasizing that MTQM is not just a competition, but a medium for nurturing the younger generation that combines spiritual and intellectual intelligence. She expressed her gratitude for the achievements of her mentored students. “We at UT Majene are very grateful and proud that one of UT Majene’s students could be part of the International MTQM and won Best I in the Men’s Tartil Quran category,” she said.

Devi Ayuni, M.Si., believes that MTQM serves as a platform to foster a balanced young Muslim generation in terms of worldly knowledge and religious understanding. She hopes that similar activities will continue to be held so that more students are inspired to deepen the values of the Al-Qur’an. “May the ties of friendship formed in this event continue and strengthen the brotherhood of Muslims in the future,” she added.

Similarly, the Director of UT Batam, Angga Sucitra Hendrayana, S.E., M.Si., stated that MTQM is not only a competition but also a space for fellowship and cultural exchange among students from different countries. “The familial atmosphere and the hospitality of the committee and host made us feel warmly welcomed. The spirit of ukhuwah Islamiyah (Islamic brotherhood) felt so strong,” he said.

This International MTQM was organized by Universitas Jambi (UNJA) and attended by the best Qari and Qariah from various universities across Indonesia and Southeast Asian countries. There were three international competition categories: Tilawatil Qur’an, Tartil Qur’an, and Qira’at Sab’ah. MTQM is not just a competition to enhance understanding and love for the Al-Qur’an, but also a moment to strengthen Islamic values, culture, and cross-national brotherhood. Therefore, in addition to these three main categories, MTQM also held a Taaruf Parade and Traditional Costume Competition showcasing the cultural richness of the Nusantara (archipelago) and Southeast Asia.

The success of Universitas Terbuka students in this International MTQM not only reflects academic achievement but also demonstrates the strength of UT’s education system in shaping the character, morals, and ethical values of the younger generation. Amidst the flexibility of distance learning, UT proves that a digital campus can also provide a meaningful nurturing space—one that reaches not only the mind but also the heart and culture.

As an impactful campus, Universitas Terbuka continues to be committed to not only producing intellectually intelligent graduates but also spiritually and socially resilient ones—ready to be agents of change in local, national, and global society.
