Hundereds of emotional and happy faces filled the Universitas Terbuka (UT) Palembang graduation hall on Wednesday, September 24, 2025. A total of 850 graduates out of 1,500 officially received their degrees during the Regional Graduation Ceremony for Period II of the Odd Semester 2025/2026 Academic Year. For them, the academic gown and diploma are not just symbols of graduation but markers of a long struggle that finally bore sweet fruit.
The Director of the UT Postgraduate School, Prof. Dr. Maman Rumanta, M.Si., delivered a meaningful message that graduation is the tangible result of perseverance. “A bachelor’s degree is a symbol of a difficult struggle. Not everything went smoothly; many stumbled or even stopped halfway. But you who are sitting in this room are the true fighters,” he said. His words were met with thunderous applause, serving as encouragement for the graduates who had overcome a path full of challenges.
As a university with a distance learning system, UT Palembang has proven itself to be a campus with vast reach. The number of its students currently stands at 41,400 people, making it the third largest UT branch in Indonesia after UT Jakarta and UT Bandung. This achievement demonstrates how UT continues to be trusted as a higher education solution for people who want to continue their studies without being hindered by distance, time, or cost.
In its development as a State Higher Education Legal Entity (PTNBH), UT continuously innovates. The Digital Learning Ecosystem concept is consistently applied, and it is now starting to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) to assist tutors. “We want UT graduates to be independent, resilient, non-plagiarizing, and high-quality individuals. We uphold academic integrity,” Prof. Maman asserted.
The improvement in academic quality is also evident through its nine postgraduate programs, six of which have achieved ‘Unggul’ (Excellent) accreditation. This reputation proves that distance education is on par with face-to-face learning, and is even able to provide more inclusive and equitable access.
The Director of UT Palembang, Drs. Muhammad Tair, M.M., affirmed that all these achievements are the result of the hard work of all campus elements. He mentioned that 2025 is a special moment because UT is turning 40 years old. For four decades, UT has been a pioneer in distance education, reaching remote corners of the country and communities in border areas. “UT reaches the unreachable. This is our great mission so that all citizens, without exception, have the opportunity to attain higher education,” he said.
With affordable tuition fees, UT Palembang is a realistic choice for the people of South Sumatra. It is no surprise that the target for new student enrollment realization surpassed 128 percent, indicating that the need for flexible education is growing significantly among the dynamic community.
High appreciation also came from the Vice Governor of South Sumatra, Cik Ujang, who personally attended the graduation ceremony. According to him, UT has played an important role in the equitable distribution of education and the improvement of human resources quality. “Graduation is not the end, but the start of a new step. UT has opened access to higher education for anyone, anywhere, regardless of age. This is a great struggle in improving the quality of human resources in South Sumatra,” he said.
This statement simultaneously confirms UT’s role in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically Goal 4 on quality education and Goal 10 on reducing inequalities. With its inclusive and affordable distance education model, UT proves that higher education can be a driving force for social change that reaches various segments of society.
This graduation was more than just an academic ceremony. It was a celebration of the courage to dream, the determination to fight, and the success of achieving the future. Amidst the challenges of globalization and technological disruption, UT Palembang serves as a bridge connecting the public with wider opportunities.
Moving forward, with the support of digital technology and a continuous spirit of innovation, UT is determined to achieve World Class University status. However, one thing will definitely not change: the commitment to always provide a learning space for anyone hungry for knowledge, regardless of age, background, or economic condition.
