Green Breath Planting The Future, Here’s How UT Promote SDGs Through Collective Action

Tangerang Selatan, September 25, 2025 – Universitas Terbuka (UT) concluded its series of events for the UT Distance Education & UIGM National Meeting 2025 in a special way: a Green Breath Activity titled “Breathe Green, Plant the Future” at the UT Lake area. Led directly by the Rector of UT and the Vice Chairman of UI GreenMetric, this event was not just a closing ceremony but a tangible symbol of UT’s commitment to creating a sustainable campus and inspiring the community to protect the Earth.

The event began with a welcome speech from the Vice Chairman of UI GreenMetric, Dr. Abellia Anggi Wardani, S.Hum., M.A. In her speech, Dr. Abellia praised UT for holding the event and for its contributions and innovations in supporting environmental preservation and realizing a Green Campus. “With this event, we hope that we can all contribute together to a greener and more sustainable environment,” she said.

On the same occasion, the Rector of UT, Prof. Dr. Ali Muktiyanto, SE., M.Si., expressed a similar sentiment. “Today is a special day, because holding this event is a tangible manifestation of our shared commitment. As a university that organizes distance education, UT wants to leave a beautiful, sustainable, and green environment for future generations,” said Prof. Ali.

Furthermore, Prof. Ali also stated that UT continues to be committed to creating a Green Campus. “UT continues to be a pioneer and inspiration for other universities in realizing environmental sustainability. UT has already implemented this. With our distance education learning, we can reduce transportation use and pollution from carbon emissions. With digital-based learning, we can be more efficient. At UT, it’s not the students who come to campus, but the campus that comes to the students’ homes,” he said.

The series of events continued with the symbolic planting of three types of trees: Tabebuya, Clove, and Balinese Frangipani, by the Rector of UT, the Vice Chairman of UIGM, and representatives of the UIGM participants. A total of 76 participants from various universities attended the event. The Tabebuya tree was chosen as a symbol of hope and the beauty of collaboration, with its simultaneous blooming flowers symbolizing the spirit of unity in bringing about positive change. Meanwhile, the Clove tree, a plant with high economic and social value, symbolizes resilience, sustainability, and a real contribution to the welfare of the community. The Balinese Frangipani, with its flowers identical to sincerity and life balance, is a symbol of spiritual awareness and harmony between humans and nature.

By carrying the spirit of pentahelix collaboration (academics, government, industry, community, and media), the Green Breath Activity affirmed that a commitment to sustainability must be realized through collective action. With the holding of this event, it is hoped that it will inspire other universities in Indonesia to not only focus on academic innovation but also to make a real contribution to environmental sustainability and community welfare.
