Ternate, September 23, 2025 – From the eastern end of Indonesia, specifically Papua, comes an inspiring story that depicts determination, hard work, and relentless struggle to achieve a dream. The best son of the Dani tribe from the Baliem Valley has just completed his education and obtained a Master of Public Administration degree from Universitas Terbuka (UT) Ternate. In addition to the demands of his profession as a member of the Kupang City Police Resort, Alak Police Chief AKP Albertus Mabel, S.I.K., is also deeply committed to his education.
The Universitas Terbuka (UT) Ternate Graduation Ceremony Period II of the 2024/2025 Academic Year had a far greater meaning than just a graduation ceremony for AKP Albertus Mabel. He stood not only as a recipient of the academic cap and gown but also as a symbol of the spirit of a Papuan son who succeeded in breaking through geographical boundaries, bridging cultural differences, and conquering the dynamics of a career as a state official.
“With a sense of gratitude, amidst my duties as a civil servant, I was able to complete this education. For me, learning is a lifelong journey,” he said with pride.
The title of his thesis was also in line with his profession, namely “Evaluation of Police SOP Policies regarding the Demonstration Period in Police Handling at the Ternate City Police Resort.” His hard work paid off with a GPA of 3.80. This is truly extraordinary, considering his busy schedule in carrying out his duties as a civil servant, AKP Albertus Mabel was able to complete his postgraduate education well.
This inspiring story proves that geographical, cultural, and professional boundaries are not obstacles to pursuing education. UT, through distance education, provides flexible and affordable education that can be accessed by anyone, anytime, and anywhere, unhindered by distance, time, or work commitments.
UT’s role in providing access to education for all levels of society is in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially Quality Education (SDG 4) and Reduced Inequalities (SDG 10), by providing inclusive and flexible access to higher education through digital technology, and by providing access and learning opportunities for people who have been constrained by distance, time, or economic conditions.
The story of AKP Albertus Mabel is not just an academic achievement but also a real symbol that education is a right and an opportunity that should be accessible to anyone, anywhere, without limitations of space and time. Through the strategic role of Universitas Terbuka, the hope of gaining knowledge and improving the quality of life is becoming more widely available, especially for those in frontier and remote areas. The never-give-up spirit and high dedication shown by Albertus serve as an inspiration for all of us, proving that with strong determination and the right access to education, every individual is capable of achieving brilliant accomplishments and contributing positively to the nation and the country. Education is not just a degree; it is a bridge to a brighter future for the next generation of the nation.
Hopefully, this story will inspire the younger generation of Indonesia to never stop learning, and to continue to strive for achievement in their respective fields, wherever they are and under any circumstances.
