Tangerang Selatan, September 11, 2025 – To commemorate its 41st Dies Natalis, Universitas Terbuka (UT) once again demonstrated its role as an Impactful Campus through a large-scale social service activity as a form of community service. The event, held at the Universitas Terbuka Convention Center (UTCC) at the UT Headquarters in South Tangerang, involved lecturers, educational staff, students, the UT Dharma Wanita Persatuan—and collaborated with the OneSight EssilorLuxottica Foundation and MNC Peduli.

This year’s social service program was focused on helping students from underprivileged families access basic needs to support their learning process and daily lives. A total of 500 students from elementary, middle, and high schools received free eye examinations, prescription glasses, and school shoes.
The beneficiaries were chosen based on two main criteria: medical criteria (having vision impairments that can be corrected with glasses) and economic criteria (having financial limitations for eye care or school supplies). The students came from 12 schools in South Tangerang, including SDN Benda Baru 03, SMPN 1 Tangerang Selatan, SMPN 9 Tangerang Selatan, SMAN 1 Tangerang Selatan, and other schools.
Prof. Dra. Dewi Artati Padmo Putri, M.A., Ph.D., the Head of the 41st UT Dies Natalis Committee, affirmed that this social service was based on various studies showing that uncorrected vision impairment is one of the main obstacles in the learning process. “By ensuring students have access to adequate eye care and basic needs like school shoes, UT strives to open opportunities for improved academic achievement, greater participation in class, and higher self-confidence for young students,” she concluded.
In line with this, the Acting Vice Rector for Finance, Resources, and General Affairs, Adrian Sutawijaya, S.E., M.Si., highly appreciated this strategic collaboration. He added that this activity is an implementation of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education in the field of community service. “UT’s Social Service is a tangible form of UT’s care in improving the quality of life of the community. We hope this activity will foster a spirit of learning and be a motivation for the younger generation to achieve a brighter future,” he explained.
A similar commitment was conveyed by the partners. The Head of Commercial Frame and Head of Trade Marketing of the OneSight EssilorLuxoticca Foundation, Dailami Aziz, emphasized that this activity aligns with their global mission to eliminate uncorrected vision impairment in one generation. He stated that this social service is a strategic step that provides positive benefits, especially in the fields of health and education. Dailami also hopes that this activity will continue every year and provide benefits. “We hope the collaboration with UT continues and that more students receive real benefits,” he concluded.
Meanwhile, Arisma Ranisa, as the Partnership Lead of MNC Peduli, also welcomed this UT activity. “UT and we have the same mission, which is to have a concern for education, and this is in line with our program. We hope that this activity can increase students’ motivation to learn and have an impact on their future,” she said.
In the implementation of the activity, the free eye examination and provision of glasses were fully supported by the OneSight EssilorLuxottica Foundation, while MNC Peduli played a role in publication and information dissemination to ensure the program reached a wider audience. The OneSight EssilorLuxottica Foundation is an official charity organization committed to eliminating uncorrected vision impairment in one generation. As part of EssilorLuxottica’s commitment to achieving universal access to vision care, the Foundation works to expand access for millions of people in underserved communities around the world. The Foundation is also a global collaboration partner of the SPECS 2030 initiative launched by the World Health Organization (WHO), which focuses on addressing refractive errors, preventing myopia, and increasing access to vision care in resource-limited areas.

This 41st Dies Natalis Social Service not only strengthens UT’s role as an educational institution but also affirms its social contribution to the community. This step is in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) through improved eye health, SDG 4 (Quality Education) by supporting student academic success, and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) through cross-sectoral collaboration.
Through this social service, Universitas Terbuka is increasingly consistent in showing its commitment as a campus that not only provides access to higher education for all but also brings a tangible direct impact to the wider community in overcoming basic obstacles to achieving quality education.
