Insane! UT Lecturers Gained 8 New Patents, Reinforcing Groundbreakinng Innovations

Universitas Terbuka (UT) has once again affirmed its position as the largest Open and Distance Higher Education (PTTJJ) institution in Indonesia, excelling not only in online-based distance learning systems but also actively generating innovation. This time, eight patents have been successfully obtained by inventors who are UT lecturers strategically collaborating with the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) and several other prominent universities. This achievement is concrete evidence that the UT academic community is not only adaptive to modern developments but also deeply committed to research and innovation, as well as productive in creating relevant and impactful inventions for society. 

The eight patents were officially issued by the Directorate General of Intellectual Property – Ministry of Law and Human Rights of the Republic of Indonesia. Several of the patent-protected inventions include innovations in education, technology, and food.

The Rector of Universitas Terbuka, Dr. Mohamad Yunus, S.S., M.A., expressed his highest appreciation to the academic community who have dedicated themselves to research and innovation activities. “Alhamdulillah, congratulations to those who have obtained patents. May this be an inspiration for the entire academic community to continue producing impactful works,” said Mohamad Yunus. The UT Rector also expressed his deepest gratitude to the Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM) which has provided a platform for the academic community to continue innovating, thus contributing not only to the scientific field but also to the wider community. 

In line with this, the Head of the Center of Research and Community Service (LPPM) UT, Prof. Dra. Dewi Artati Padmo Putri, M.A., Ph.D., also conveyed her highest appreciation for the innovative works produced by the UT Academics. “This patent achievement is an important milestone in building the reputation of Universitas Terbuka. We are proud because the resulting inventions can reflect the spirit of producing research outputs that can be downstreamed through implementation in UT’s learning processes and can benefit the wider community through collaboration with the business and industrial sectors,” said Prof. Dewi Padmo. 

The inventors who successfully registered patents come from various faculties, ranging from the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP), the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST), to the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), as well as the Faculty of Law, Social and Political Sciences (FHISIP). The diversity of scientific backgrounds reflects the spirit of cross-disciplinary collaboration that is a hallmark of research at UT. 

UT’s strategic steps in strengthening the research capacity of lecturers include research incentive programs, collaboration with industry, and intensive support for the intellectual property rights management process. UT also actively utilizes digital platforms to expand the dissemination of research results so that they can be accessed by the wider community. 

This achievement is concrete evidence of UT’s continued enthusiasm for innovation, dedication, and commitment to developing Science and Technology (IPTEK) in Indonesia.
