UT Helped The Success of This Becak Driver’s Son!

A person’s life journey is often full of challenges, but for those with strong determination, no obstacle is too great to overcome. This inspiring story comes from Dr. H. Jamhari, S.Pd., M.A.P., a becak driver’s son from Bondowoso who successfully earned a doctorate and became an expert in the field of elections. His success proves that education is the main key to changing fate, and Universitas Terbuka (UT) became an important pillar in his academic journey.

A Childhood Full of Challenges

Jamhari was born into limited economic conditions. Since childhood, he has been accustomed to facing various difficulties. His mother always said, “I have nothing to leave you, son, only the tip of a pen that can lead you to become a successful person.” This sentence became a burning spirit that led him to pursue an educational path full of challenges. To help his family, Jamhari worked various jobs from an early age, even selling newspapers in Jember to fund his education. However, economic limitations did never made him give up

Education is the Key

His formal education began at SDN Mandiro 1 Tegalampel Bondowoso, continued to MTs Negeri Jember 2, then MAN Bondowoso. His perseverance and enthusiasm for learning enabled him to continue his studies at STKIP PGRI Situbondo majoring in Economic Education. Not stopping there, he continued his education to the master’s level at UT, taking the Public Administration Master’s program. The choice to study at UT was not without reason. As a pioneer of technology-based distance education, UT provides flexibility for anyone who wants to continue their education without having to leave work or other responsibilities.

A Brilliant Career

Equipped with the knowledge he gained at UT, Jamhari’s career grew. He began his career as a teacher at various schools in Berau, then was appointed as a school principal, and eventually held various strategic positions in the Education Office and the Berau Regency Election Supervisory Board (Bawaslu). His experience in the world of education and elections made him interested in researching the role of Bawaslu in maintaining clean and fair democracy.

Earning a Doctorate

His academic journey continued to the doctoral level at Universitas 17 Agustus 1945 (Untag) Surabaya. His doctoral dissertation raised a crucial issue: how Bawaslu handled violations in the 2020 Simultaneous Regional Elections. Jamhari provided concrete recommendations to strengthen the democratic system in Indonesia, such as the formation of a special ad hoc court for Regional Elections and strengthening Bawaslu’s authority in conducting hand-caught operations (OTT) against election violations. He also wants to continue to develop his academic studies in the field of administration and election policy, and contribute to improving a more transparent and fair election system.

UT: A Bridge to Success

Jamhari’s story proves that nothing is impossible for those who have high determination and enthusiasm for learning. He is also living proof that UT diplomas are recognized by various educational and government institutions, opening up wider opportunities for anyone who wants to continue higher education to the S2 and S3 levels. UT is not just a flexible place to study, but also a bridge for anyone who wants to pursue a higher academic level. With a globally recognized technology-based distance learning system, UT graduates have ample opportunities to pursue careers and continue their studies to higher levels, both at home and abroad.
