Jakarta, January 3, 2025—Universitas Terbuka (UT) received a resounding endorsement during a meeting with the Minister of Higher Education, Sains, and Technology– Prof. Dr. Ir. Satryo Soemantri Brodjonegoro underscoring the institution’s pivotal role in advancing higher education through distance learning. The meeting, attended by key officials from the Ministry, highlighted UT’s achievements and discussed strategies to address emerging challenges in the education sector.

The Minister emphasized the importance of microcredentials as a tool to equip learners with specific, industry-relevant skills. Recognizing UT’s affordable tuition fees, the Minister noted that the institution’s accessibility has made it a popular choice, not only among Gen Z students but also among professionals and high-ranking officials, including, e.g., the current Acting Director-General of Higher Education.

“UT plays a significant role in delivering knowledge across the nation. This must be continued and further developed,” said the Minister. He also stressed the need for accreditation assessors assigned to UT to have expertise in Distance Education (PJJ), ensuring fair and informed evaluations.

The meeting also addressed the need for UT to expand its academic offerings. Accompanied by the Acting Secretary-General, the Acting Director-General of Higher Education, and the Special Advisor for Higher Education, the Minister urged UT to produce more doctoral graduates specializing in Distance Education.

The officials highlighted the importance of innovation in student assessment systems, particularly in response to the rapid advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI). Such developments are expected to enhance the learning experience and maintain UT’s position as a leader in distance education.

UT’s Rector, Prof. Ojat Darojat, M.Bus., Ph.D., accompanied by all UT’s Vice Rectors, emphasized the challenges faced by students in remote and underdeveloped regions, particularly in Eastern Indonesia and 3T (disadvantaged, frontier, outermost) areas. The Rector called for Ministry support in implementing cutting-edge technological infrastructures to ensure equitable access to education for all UT students.

“With better connectivity, we can bridge the gap and provide quality education to students in even the most remote corners of the country,” said the Rector.

The Rector also informed the Minister of UT’s active role in sharing expertise in distance education with other universities, both public and private. This commitment underscores UT’s dedication to fostering a robust higher education ecosystem, particularly in the context of distance learning.

The meeting concluded with a photo session and an exchange of gifts, symbolizing a shared vision of collaboration and innovation. Universitas Terbuka remains steadfast in its mission to provide accessible, high-quality education to all Indonesians.
