UT’s Lecturer Became a Keynote Speaker at the International Conference on Open and Innovative Education 2024 at Hong Kong Metropolitan University

Hong Kong, 5 July 2024 — The 2024 International Conference on Open and Innovative Education (ICOIE 2024) was held at Hong Kong Metropolitan University, drawing educators and researchers from across the globe. The conference, which began with a Pre-conference Seminar on 2 July, transitioned into a hybrid Main Conference from 3–5 July, reflecting the evolving landscape of education in a post-pandemic world.

One of the standout sessions was the keynote speech by Rahmat Budiman, PhD, a lecturer as well as the Vice-Rector for Research, Innovation, Partnership, and Business of Universitas Terbuka and Secretary-General of the Asian Association of Open Universities (AAOU). Titled “Distance Education Universities in Asia: Challenges and Opportunities,” His address provided an in-depth analysis of the rapid expansion of distance education in Asia, a trend accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

His speech commenced with insights from an Asian Development Bank report, illustrating the swift rise of distance education institutions across the continent. He attributed this growth to two primary factors: the pandemic’s forced shift to remote learning and regulatory reforms in countries such as Indonesia that have supported the proliferation of distance education programs.

Highlighting Asia’s unique demographic and educational landscape, he noted that the region’s large, growing population and the concentration of the world’s largest universities—referred to as “mega-universities”—underscore the vital role distance education will play. These factors are instrumental in addressing the increasing demand for higher education and skilled labor.

In his presentation, he also tackled the critical issue of quality in distance education. He proposed three key initiatives aimed at enhancing the standards of distance learning institutions:

  1. Establishment of an International Accreditation System – to ensure that distance education programs meet global quality standards.
  2. Promotion of Cross-Border Collaboration – to foster knowledge sharing and innovation across institutions and countries.
  3. Creation of a Dedicated World University Ranking for Distance Education Institutions – to provide prospective students and stakeholders with a clear benchmark of institutional quality.

His insights provided a comprehensive overview of the current state and future prospects of distance education in Asia, offering both challenges and opportunities for educators, policymakers, and students alike. The session underscored the transformative potential of distance education in expanding access to higher education and addressing regional educational needs.

Other keynote speakers at the conference came from various institutions and countries as follows.

  • Dr. Mutlu Cukurova from University College London
  • Wu Feng, Ph.D. from Peking University
