UT’s Visiting Scholars to China and Turkey to Enhance Quality with Technological and Cultural Approach

From May 22-24, 2024, Universitas Terbuka (UT) conducted a visiting scholar program at the Open University of China (OUC) in Beijing. This initiative is part of UT’s efforts to achieve World Class University (WCU) status, supported by the Higher Education Endowment Fund (HEEF).
As an initial step, UT visited several universities in China and Turkey, including OUC and Shanghai Open University in China, as well as Anadolu University in Turkey. A total of 15 lecturers and educational staff from UT who met the qualifications participated in this visit.

At OUC, the UT delegation, which included lecturers from the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST), the Faculty of Law, Social, and Political Sciences (FHISIP), and staff from the Directorate of Information Systems and the Internal Audit Office, was warmly welcomed by Prof. Dr. Fan Xianrui, the vice-rector of OUC. Prof. Fan expressed his hope that this visit would strengthen the collaboration between OUC and UT. The discussions were lively, focusing on the latest technological advancements such as adaptive learning, where AI customizes learning materials for each student.

The UT team also visited the Experimental College at OUC to observe the application of AI-based intelligent video analysis, capable of analyzing speech in videos which is applicable in various fields, including biology.
On May 22, 2024, the UT delegation continued their visit to Tianjin Open University. They were greeted by Dr. Changyou Du, the rector of Tianjin Open University, and explored the history and learning support services for students. They also witnessed a calligraphy training activity for the elderly conducted by students.
The following day, the UT delegation visited iFlytek in Beijing, known for developing AI products such as translators used in various countries.

Meanwhile, the second UT team visited Shanghai Open University (SOU). They were welcomed at the Institute of International Exchange and the Smart Learning Center, where they observed learning technologies, quality assurance, and student support. Discussions about collaboration with SOU were also productive.
The third UT team visiting Anadolu University in Turkey participated in various activities, including the Quality Assurance Unit and the Spring Festival 2024 “Student Fair and International Student Culture Day,” where they showcased Indonesian culture through traditional attire and rendang as Indonesian traditional food.

These visits by the three UT teams pave the way for further collaboration in research, publications, and training, bringing UT one step closer to its goal of becoming a world-class university.
