Tangerang Selatan, June 12, 2026 — A demanding schedule as a regional leader has not stopped Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT) Governor Melki Laka Lena from continuing his education. Demonstrating his commitment to lifelong learning, Melki has officially registered as an applicant for the Master’s (S2) Program at Universitas Terbuka (UT) Kupang.
Melki completed the entire postgraduate admission process online on Sunday (June 7, 2026). The selection included an Academic Potential Test (TPA), an English proficiency test, and a program-specific subject examination.
His decision to pursue graduate studies is not solely aimed at enhancing his personal qualifications, but also reflects his commitment to strengthening human resource development in NTT. His participation sends a strong message that access to quality higher education is no longer constrained by distance, time, or professional responsibilities.
Melki explained that he had long planned to continue his studies at the master’s level. However, his busy schedule, first as a member of DPR RI and now as Governor of NTT, had delayed those plans. UT’s distance learning system ultimately provided the flexibility he needed to pursue his academic goals.
“I have wanted to pursue a master’s degree for a long time, but my schedule has always been very limited, both when I served in the House of Representatives and now as governor. UT provides us with the opportunity to study through an online learning system,” Melki said on Sunday.
Melki expressed hope that his decision would inspire young civil servants (ASN) and the younger generation in NTT to continue improving their competencies without having to leave their jobs. This effort to strengthen human capital also aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 on ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education for all.
“I hope my decision to continue my studies can motivate young civil servants and other young people. Together with UT, we can build NTT. Let’s move NTT forward,” he added.
UT Kupang Director Dr. Albert Gamot Malau, S.Si., M.Si., welcomed the governor’s decision. According to Albert, UT’s flexible online learning system is specifically designed to accommodate individuals with demanding schedules, including public officials carrying significant responsibilities.
“Despite his busy schedule, the Governor is still able to make time for higher education. One of the most suitable options is Universitas Terbuka because its learning system is conducted online,” Albert said.
Albert believes the governor’s example will have a positive impact on human resource development across NTT. Improving the educational qualifications of civil servants and the local workforce, he noted, is essential to enhancing the province’s competitiveness while also contributing to sustainable economic growth in line with SDG 8.
“We hope that the Governor’s decision to study at UT Kupang will encourage government staff and other professionals in NTT to continue their education without leaving their jobs. We wish Governor Melki every success. May NTT continue moving forward and become increasingly competitive,” Albert concluded.
