UT Achieves Higher Webometrics Ranking in 2023

Universities across the globe are engaged in a competitive race to enhance the quality of their services in various domains, encompassing teaching, learning, research, publication, community service, and the dissemination of academic information through university websites. Among the leading university-ranking organizations utilized and recognized by 31,000 institutions in more than 200 countries worldwide is Webometrics.

Webometrics is an internationally recognized university ranking system that employs a combination of indicators to evaluate universities. These indicators include Visibility (or Impact), which measures the influence of web content with a 50% weighting; Transparency (or Openness), which considers the researchers cited the most with a 10% weighting; and Excellence, determined by the most cited scientific publication, carrying a 40% weighting.

The Webometrics ranking system is published by Cybermetrics Lab, a research group affiliated with the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) based in Madrid, Spain. This ranking undergoes biannual updates in January and July each year, ensuring that the evaluations remain current and relevant for universities worldwide.

Universitas Terbuka (UT), as a Legal Entity State University (PTN-BH) and a trailblazer in Open and Distance Higher Education in Indonesia, is deeply committed to continuously enhancing the quality of education within the framework of the ‘Tri Dharma’ principles of Higher Education. This commitment encompasses the presentation of information and website-based academic services evaluated by the Webometrics ranking system. Additionally, these aspects are included as one of the assessment items in the university’s Main Performance Index by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology of the Republic of Indonesia.

Through concerted efforts and collaboration among the leadership and stakeholders, UT achieved an improvement in its Webometrics ranking both at the national and global levels. In January 2023, UT was ranked 68th among Indonesian universities and 4,931st globally, according to the Webometrics ranking results. However, by July 2023, UT’s rank rose to 60th in Indonesia and 4,256th in the world. Further details about UT’s progress in the Webometrics ranking can be found in Table 1, illustrating an enhancement in UT’s global standing within the Webometrics ranking system, accompanied by improvements in impact and excellence indicators.
