Efforts to provide higher education that is accessible to everyone, everywhere, have once again received well-deserved recognition. Universitas Terbuka (UT) Batam has been awarded the Tribun Batam Award 2025, honoring institutions that consistently deliver quality education services across the remote islands of the Riau Archipelago.
For UT Batam, this award is more than just a symbol of achievement — it is a reaffirmation of the university’s commitment to opening learning opportunities for those who wish to continue their education, unhindered by distance or time.
“This has always been our dream at Universitas Terbuka. Our goal is to reach 20,000 students in the future,” said Amrin, Marketing Administrator of UT Batam. He explained that the award serves as new motivation to expand open and distance learning in the region, including to remote areas such as Natuna and the Anambas Islands.
Since its establishment in 1984, Universitas Terbuka has been Indonesia’s state university dedicated to providing educational opportunities for all. Its flexible learning model allows students to tailor their study schedules to their daily lives. With a combination of online learning and limited face-to-face sessions, classes can take place from anywhere as long as there is an internet connection.
“As long as there’s a signal, learning can happen,” said Amrin.
Today, UT Batam serves over 16,000 active students, ranging from working professionals and homemakers to residents of outlying islands. They study in more than 40 accredited study programs, with popular majors including Law, Education, and Management.
For many students, UT is more than just a university — it’s a chance to move forward. With an affordable registration fee of only Rp100,000, anyone can begin their educational journey without financial burden.
“Anyone can pursue higher education without worrying about high costs — and UT is a public university,” Amrin emphasized.
UT Batam also strengthens collaborations with various institutions and professional organizations to ensure that its academic quality remains relevant to the evolving needs of society. This approach aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4: ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all.
More than an academic institution, UT Batam serves as a space for new beginnings — whether for career advancement, family aspirations, or dreams once set aside.
“We hope more people will get to know UT and choose to continue learning for the betterment of the nation,” Amrin added.
Through its spirit and actions, Universitas Terbuka Batam reminds us that education is not a privilege for the few — it is a fundamental right for everyone who seeks to grow, empower themselves, and contribute to society.
