Indonesia’s 80th Anniversary, United, Honored, Welfared People, and A Leading Indonesia

South Tangerang, August 17, 2025 — Universitas Terbuka (UT), together with the entire Indonesian nation, solemnly commemorated the 80th Anniversary of the Proclamation of Independence of the Republic of Indonesia. This historic moment serves as a tribute to the nation’s heroes and a reaffirmation of the commitment to building Indonesia’s future through education.

The flag-raising ceremony was held in the courtyard of the Universitas Terbuka Convention Center (UTCC), led directly by the Rector of UT, Dr. Mohamad Yunus, S.S., M.A., and attended by university leaders, faculty members, administrative staff, and personnel from UT Headquarters. In a solemn atmosphere, the ceremony embraced the spirit of struggle, gotong royong, and unity that continue to fuel the nation’s journey forward.

In his address, the Rector emphasized that independence is the result of a long struggle by the nation’s predecessors—a struggle that must now be continued with a spirit of innovation, education, and unity.

“Happy 80th Anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia. August 17 is a day of renewed energy for us all—to unite, to be sovereign, for the people to prosper, for Indonesia to advance,” said Dr. Yunus.

The Rector further underlined the importance of education as a cornerstone of national progress. In a world that is constantly evolving, every individual must be prepared to adapt and innovate. Currently, UT is implementing a new, modern curriculum that emphasizes active, relevant, and contextual learning in accordance with the real needs of society and the labor market. This academic transformation is supported by enhanced digital services, including the migration of the student information system from 4G to 5G, as well as capacity building for lecturers and staff through intensive training programs.

Organizational transformation is also taking place at UT. With the support of the Board of Trustees (MWA) and the Academic Senate (SAU), UT continues to develop into an institution that adapts to the times. The leadership of Dr. Mohamad Yunus, now approaching the end of his term, marks an era of transformation towards a more advanced UT—globally competitive and impactful for the nation.

The 80th Independence Day celebration also served as a reflection: true independence means that every citizen has equal opportunities to learn and grow. UT, with its open and distance learning system, works to realize this ideal—reaching communities from Sabang to Merauke, and even abroad. This mission aligns with UT’s commitment to supporting SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) by providing inclusive, modern, and environmentally friendly access to quality education.

With the spirit of the Proclamation, UT will continue to strengthen its position as a Digital, Open, and Impactful University, producing excellent graduates of strong character, ready to help lead Indonesia toward a more advanced, sovereign, and prosperous future.
