Universitas Terbuka (UT) has once again brought honor to Indonesia on the global stage. This time, Fika Nur Sabrina, or familiarly known as Fika, an Accounting Study Program student from UT Bandung, was selected as a delegate in the prestigious International Student Leaders Meeting on Sustainability (ISLMS) 2025 held at the University of Szeged, Hungary, from April 10–12, 2025.
The prestigious international forum brought together students from 27 countries and 57 universities to exchange ideas and solutions related to sustainability issues. On this occasion, Fika appeared as a speaker, delivering the presentation titled “Implementation of the Internet of Things (IoT) in Realizing a Sustainable Campus.” ISLMS is closely related to indicator 6 in UI GreenMetric, namely Education & Research. This is reflected in student involvement in research and SDG-based projects.
Through her presentation, Fika conveyed how IoT technology can be optimally utilized in a campus environment. She highlighted various aspects, ranging from automated sensor-based energy management, digital waste monitoring systems, to the use of data to create environmentally friendly and efficient learning spaces.
“This experience broadened my understanding of the importance of cross-country collaborative action in addressing sustainability challenges. I believe every campus can be a living laboratory for change,” said Fika after the discussion session.
Fika’s presentation received a warm welcome from forum participants. Several representatives from other countries even asked questions and expressed interest in exploring collaborations on technology-based sustainability projects. Not only did she bring innovative ideas about the Internet of Things (IoT) for Green Campus, but Fika also introduced UT’s digital-based, flexible, and inclusive distance learning system as part of sustainable digital education innovation.
Fika’s participation in ISLMS 2025 is not only a personal achievement but also a reflection of Universitas Terbuka’s commitment to encouraging its students to be active in global forums, particularly in terms of sustainability campus. As a state university based on open and distance learning, UT continues to foster a spirit of independence, innovation, and social awareness among its students. UT further strengthens its commitment to the UI GreenMetric partnership since joining in 2011.
“Fika is a real example that UT students are able to compete at the international level. We are very proud and fully support her participation. This is in line with UT’s vision to produce graduates who are excellent, adaptive, and globally competitive,” said a UT representative in an official statement.
As a campus that has served more than 676.000 students from various parts of Indonesia and abroad, UT continuously encourages the active involvement of its academic community in strategic global issues. Activities such as ISLMS are an important platform to demonstrate that Indonesian students—including those from distance learning systems—have high competitiveness in global forums.
With the spirit of innovation and sustainability that continues to be echoed, UT hopes that more students will be active in international forums and bring the name of Indonesia and distance education to the global stage. The participation of UT students in events such as ISLMS also strengthens Indonesia’s contribution to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially in the fields of education, innovation, and global collaboration.
