TANGERANG SELATAN – On one side of the stage stood a government official responsible for overseeing public services. Nearby, the CEO of an international company smiled proudly in academic regalia. Elsewhere, a graduate with a disability was recognized for the determination that carried them through higher education. A scholarship recipient celebrated turning opportunity into achievement. They came from different professions, age groups, and life journeys. Yet on Tuesday (July 28), all of their stories converged at one meaningful moment: the Universitas Terbuka (UT) Graduation Ceremony for the 2025/2026 Even Semester Academic Year, Region 3.
The occasion was far more than an emotional graduation ceremony. It served as a powerful illustration of how higher education can reach everyone. A total of 1,773 graduates were officially conferred their degrees at the Universitas Terbuka Convention Center (UTCC), sending a clear message that the opportunity to learn does not end when someone begins a career, leads an institution, lives abroad, or faces physical challenges.
This is the face of Universitas Terbuka today. Through its open and distance higher education system, UT provides a flexible learning environment that enables students to enhance their competencies without leaving behind their careers, families, or commitments to public service. This flexibility is what allows the university to bring together individuals from diverse backgrounds within the same academic community.
One of the most inspiring stories came from Karel Nauw, Assistant for Government and People’s Welfare at the Regional Secretariat and Acting Head of the Education Office of Tambrauw Regency. Despite his responsibilities as a regional government official, he successfully completed a Master of Management degree through UT Sorong. Sharing the same stage was Verawati Basri, CEO of PT Trans Pacific Global, who graduated from the Law Study Program through UT’s Overseas Learning Services. Their achievements demonstrate that professional commitments are no longer barriers to pursuing higher education when learning opportunities are designed to accommodate students’ needs.
This is the spirit that UT continues to promote. UT Rector Prof. Dr. Ali Muktiyanto emphasized that the university is not exclusively intended for working professionals. As a public university, UT is equally open to recent high school graduates, individuals seeking to enhance their competencies, and anyone who previously lacked access to higher education. With affordable tuition and a flexible learning system, UT provides an inclusive academic environment for people from all walks of life across Indonesia.
This commitment is also reflected in the university’s ongoing digital transformation. Most examinations have now transitioned to an online system supported by digital proctoring technology to safeguard academic integrity. At the same time, UT continues to maintain multiple learning service models to ensure that students living in areas with limited internet connectivity receive equal access to quality education. This transformation demonstrates how technology can be leveraged to expand educational access rather than create new inequalities.
Behind the celebration, UT also recognized graduates whose perseverance has become a source of inspiration. The Best Undergraduate Graduate Award was presented to Hilma Bayu Aji from the Accounting Study Program at UT Semarang, who achieved a perfect cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 4.00. Meanwhile, the Dedicated Graduate Award was presented to Naufal Ammar Andinar, a Communication Studies graduate from UT Semarang who has an upper-limb physical disability. Another recognition was given to Zulfikar Kusnadi Karim, a Management graduate from UT Ambon and recipient of the Indonesia Smart College Card (KIP-Kuliah) Scholarship, demonstrating how access to education can open pathways to a brighter future.
Through the theme “Shaping an Innovative, Ethical, and Globally Competitive Generation,” UT reaffirmed that university graduates are expected to possess not only academic excellence but also strong character, integrity, and the adaptability needed to thrive in a rapidly changing world. The message reflects the role of higher education as a long-term investment in developing outstanding human resources to support Indonesia’s Golden Vision 2045.
More broadly, this spirit aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4: Quality Education, which seeks to ensure inclusive and equitable access to education for all. At the same time, strengthening the competencies of graduates from diverse professional backgrounds contributes to SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, recognizing education as the foundation for creating a more productive and globally competitive workforce.
Ultimately, the UT Region 3 Graduation Ceremony was more than an academic celebration, but it was also a tribute to the enduring spirit of lifelong learning. From regional government officials to corporate executives, from graduates with disabilities to scholarship recipients, every graduate demonstrated that higher education remains within reach for everyone. Through its flexible learning system, Universitas Terbuka continues to ensure that every individual has an equal opportunity to grow, learn, and build a brighter future.
