Tangerang Selatan, July 8, 2026 — International student exchange programs have long been associated with students from conventional universities. Universitas Terbuka (UT) is challenging that perception. Through its Student Exchange and Student Mobility EQUITY 2026 Program, UT has demonstrated that students enrolled in open and distance learning are equally capable of participating in international academic experiences.
A total of 25 outstanding UT students have recently returned to Indonesia after completing a one-month student exchange program at two partner universities: Universiti Selangor (UNISEL), Malaysia, and Pangasinan State University (PSU), Philippines. Supported by the EQUITY Program and the Indonesia Endowment Fund for Education (Lembaga Pengelola Dana Pendidikan – LPDP), the initiative demonstrates that access to quality international education is no longer limited by distance, location, or students’ educational backgrounds.
Behind the departure of these students was a highly competitive selection process. Out of 110 applicants representing UT regional offices across Indonesia, only 25 students were selected through a joint evaluation conducted by the Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM), the International Office, and UT’s faculties.
Dr. Heriyanni, S.I.P., M.A., Head of the Center for Community Service at UT’s LPPM, explained that the selected participants came from 13 regional UT offices, representing four faculties and the Vocational School. According to her, this diversity reflects Universitas Terbuka’s inclusive character and its commitment to providing equal opportunities for all students to develop on the global stage.
“This program truly reflects the inclusiveness and diversity of UT students,” said Heriyanni.
The experience extended far beyond attending classes abroad. During the month-long program, students not only participated in academic activities but also immersed themselves in different cultures, educational systems, and local communities in their host countries. These experiences are expected to help shape students into adaptable, open-minded individuals who are prepared to compete as global citizens.
This vision underpins Universitas Terbuka’s ongoing efforts to expand its international partnerships. For UT Vice Rector for Academic Affairs and Student Affairs, Prof. Rahmat Budiman, S.S., M.Hum., Ph.D., the student mobility initiative represents the realization of a long-standing aspiration rather than simply another academic program.
He explained that for many years, organizing student exchange programs at UT posed unique challenges because most UT students are working professionals with limited availability for overseas mobility programs. However, support from the EQUITY Program and LPDP has finally enabled UT students to gain valuable international learning experiences.
“This is a student exchange program that we have dreamed of for a long time. Thanks to the support of EQUITY and LPDP, we have finally been able to make it a reality,” he said.
Prof. Rahmat further emphasized that international exposure provides students with an important advantage as they enter the workforce. In addition to broadening their academic perspectives, overseas learning experiences strengthen students’ professional portfolios and enhance the global competitiveness of Universitas Terbuka graduates.
He also encouraged participants to share their experiences through social media, believing that authentic student stories are an effective way to demonstrate that UT students actively participate in academic and extracurricular activities, including international programs.
“Independent learning does not mean learning alone. UT students can still collaborate, participate in international programs, and build global portfolios,” he said.
Looking ahead, Universitas Terbuka aims to expand the program by providing more students with similar opportunities across a wider range of destination countries. As a member of the Asian Association of Open Universities (AAOU), UT is also strengthening international collaboration through reciprocal exchange schemes to ensure the sustainability of student mobility programs.
Ultimately, the Student Exchange EQUITY 2026 Program represents far more than an overseas academic experience. It symbolizes that quality education is accessible to everyone, regardless of where they live, their age, or their profession. Through its flexible open and distance learning system and an expanding international network, Universitas Terbuka continues to demonstrate that every student has an equal opportunity to learn, grow, and compete on the global stage.
