To Establish a World-Class University: Universitas Terbuka (UT) Attended QS China Summit 2024 

Universitas Terbuka, acting as PTN-BH, has the vision to be a world-class open and distance university. A World-class purpose has to be established in the context of higher education service performance with international standards and other qualifications of international qualities. To realize the World Class University (WCU), UT utilizes the endowment grant (Dana Abadi Perguruan Tinggi – DAPT) from Indonesia Endowment Fund for Education Agency of the Ministry of Finance RI. 

One of the designed activities to realize the WCU includes following various activities organized by the World University Ranking institution. One of the implementations hosted by QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) as a distinguished ranking institution in the higher educational sector globally, is QS China Summit 2024. A discussed topic was “Remaining Distinct in Global Higher Education: China’s Place in the New World of Education.”  

QS China Summit 2024 explored a self-understanding of their own institutions and necessities, along with their contribution to China’s global leadership in higher education. This activity was important for UT to be able to set a strategy like other universities in order to be on a global leaderboard. The source person shares the strategies, experiences, and ideas, from their respective institutions to reach a number of measurement indicators to be a world-class university. 

UT delegations to QS China Summit 2024 in Shanghai as follows: the Vice-Rector for Information Systems and Student Affairs, Prof. Dr.Paken Pandiangan, S.Si., M.Si., Vice Dean for Academic Affairs of FEB, Dr. Kurnia Endah Riana, S.E., M.Com., and Manager of Academic Quality Assurance for KPM, Dr. Irsanti Widuri Asih, M.Si.  

The notable discussed topics in that forum, were Navigating the Future: Corporate Sustainability and Graduates’ Hiring Criteria in Today’s Workforce, From Lab to Life (Research and Innovation), Navigating the Future of Technology (Innovation & Knowledge Transfer), On the Move: Why Student Mobility Matters (Student Mobility), Cultivating Inclusivity in Education and Advancing Global Gender Leadership. 

During the event, UT delegations networked with other university delegations from across nations to look for possibilities in establishing collaboration to qualify world-class indicators, namely Research and Discovery (academic reputation, citations per paper, papers per faculty), employability outcomes (employer reputation), learning experience (faculty-student ratio, staff with PhD), and global engagement (international research network, inbound exchange students, international faculty, international students, outbound exchange students). 

QS China Summit 2024 indicated significant activity for UT which just started the initial step to participate in world university rankings. By that, UT managed to build a network with QS and other universities, as well as the lessons learnt to realize the world ranking indicators.
