Sometimes, a small step can open the door to a much larger future. In the spirit of “Sumbawa Unggul, Maju, dan Sejahtera” (Sumbawa Excellent, Advanced, and Prosperous), the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Sumbawa Regency Government and Universitas Terbuka (UT) on Friday (28/11/2025) marked the beginning of a shared effort to ensure that higher education is accessible to all members of society, without exception.
The MoU, witnessed by heads of Regional Apparatus Organizations (OPD) and UT representatives, was more than just a ceremonial moment. It was born from real needs on the ground: improving the quality of Human Resources (HR) is the key to regional development. In this context, the partnership between the Sumbawa Regency Government and UT becomes a concrete strategy to address the longstanding challenges of equitable access to education, especially in island regions and remote areas. This collaboration aligns closely with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Quality Education (SDG 4) and Partnerships for the Goals (SDG 17).
Sumbawa Regent, Ir. H. Syarafuddin Jarot, MP., known as Haji Jarot, emphasized that the cooperation is not just about opening access, but about building a more competitive future for Sumbawa. “Let this MoU be our first step toward creating long-term positive impact. Improving the quality of our human resources is the key to enhancing public services and strengthening our regional competitiveness, in line with our vision of achieving an excellent, advanced, and prosperous Sumbawa,” he said.
However, Haji Jarot also stressed that the commitment must not stop at a signed document. In a warm yet serious tone, he added, “The real goal is implementation on the ground. It is the community who must feel the direct benefits of this collaboration.”
From Universitas Terbuka, the Director of UT Mataram, Herianto, S.IP., MM., stated that UT’s involvement in this partnership aligns with the national mission of expanding access to education. He explained that UT is designed so that anyone, anywhere, can pursue higher education without being limited by distance or time. “UT is a state university established by the government to ensure that every citizen, wherever they live, can access higher education. Through our online and flexible learning system, we ensure that people in Sumbawa—whether living far from the city center or engaged in full-time work—still have the opportunity to study and improve their qualifications,” he explained.
This collaboration is expected to accelerate Sumbawa’s Human Development Index (HDI), produce more skilled workers, strengthen the capacity of civil servants (ASN), and broaden opportunities for the general public to develop their competencies. With more inclusive access to higher education, regional productivity is projected to increase, creating a ripple effect on economic growth and social well-being.
Ultimately, the partnership between the Sumbawa Regency Government and UT reflects optimism that progress does not need to wait for the next generation—it can begin today. With measurable steps, mutual trust, and a clear focus on the future, education remains the strongest bridge toward a more advanced and prosperous society—and Sumbawa has now chosen to cross that bridge with confidence.
