South Tangerang, July 2025 – Universitas Terbuka (UT) has once again achieved a proud accomplishment in its efforts to become a globally sustainable campus. Based on the UI GreenMetric World University Ranking 2024, UT successfully secured 147th place worldwide out of 1,477 universities in 95 countries in the Education & Research category, and ranked 27th in Indonesia.

This achievement reflects UT’s strong commitment to strengthening the role of open higher education that is not only inclusive in access but also progressive in its dedication to supporting sustainable development. UT has successfully integrated sustainability principles into its curriculum, encouraged funding for environment-themed research, and raised awareness and environmentally friendly behavior among its academic community and the wider public.
Since 2011, UT has consistently participated in the UI GreenMetric rankings, showing significant progress. In 2024, UT’s achievement score for the Education & Research indicator reached 94.4%—one of the highest scores among the six assessment categories. This is proof that UT’s open and distance education model can drive green transformation in the academic world.
During the UI GreenMetric 2024 National Workshop at Universitas Tanjungpura Pontianak, UT, represented by Prof. Dra. Dewi Artati Padmo Putri, M.A., Ph.D., presented best practices for sustainable infrastructure management implemented by UT to support an energy-efficient, climate-friendly, and green office environment.
UT’s success in UIGM 2024 is inseparable from the implementation of its Green University strategy, which has been integrated into the UTGU (UT Green University) Strategic Plan. With three main pillars—Green Behavior, Green Setting Spatial, and Green Infrastructure—UT continues to advance from its initial UT Go Green movement in 2010 towards concrete actions that have an impact on the surrounding communities.
Rector of Universitas Terbuka, Dr. Mohamad Yunus, S.S., M.A., expressed his appreciation to the entire academic community for their collaboration and commitment in fostering a sustainable green campus. “This achievement is not an end goal, but a steppingstone to continue advancing as an open university that is not only digital and inclusive but also environmentally conscious and globally impactful,” he stated.
“We believe that distance education is not just about access, but also about quality and sustainability. This achievement shows that UT can answer the challenges of the times while remaining grounded in ecological responsibility,” said Prof. Rahmat Budiman, S.S., M.Hum., Ph.D., Vice Rector for Research, Innovation, Cooperation and Business at UT.
In line with this, Mirza Permana S.T., M.Si., Head of the UT Green University Task Force, conveyed, “This achievement is the result of the collective work of all UT members who consistently instill a green culture in their daily lives. UT will continue to move forward with measurable, integrated, and widely impactful sustainability strategies.”
With this accomplishment, UT is increasingly firm in its position as a green digital campus that supports the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
UT’s success in breaking into the UI GreenMetric 2024 world rankings in the Education & Research category is a clear reflection that the open and distance education approach can align with the global vision of sustainability. More than just international recognition, this achievement strengthens UT’s position as a pioneer of a digital green campus that drives the transformation of higher education based on innovation and environmental awareness. Going forward, UT is expected to continue to be a driver of change—inspiring other institutions, expanding best practices throughout the country, and contributing tangibly to building a more just, resilient, and sustainable Indonesia.
