As a higher education institution, the contribution of a university extends beyond just providing educational services. Addressing and contributing to environmental issues is also a critical part of its responsibilities. Universitas Terbuka (UT), as a higher education institution, continuously makes tangible contributions towards environmental preservation. By prioritizing green open spaces on campus and actively participating in various environmental conservation activities, UT plays a significant role in maintaining and caring for the earth. However, UT does not operate in isolation in these efforts; collaboration with other organizations or institutions with similar visions and missions is essential to encounter these issues effectively.

“Think globally, act locally, and make small steps to make a better world” is the tagline of Perkumpulan Pemerhati dan Peduli Lingkungan Hidup (PEPULIH), one of UT’s partners dedicated to environmental issues. PEPULIH celebrated its 20th anniversary with the theme of Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience at Kolese Kanisius, Menteng, Jakarta, on June 9, 2024.
During the peak event of its 20th-anniversary celebration, PEPULIH awarded several partners, including UT. On this occasion, UT’s Vice Rector IV for Research, Innovation, Cooperation, and Business, Rahmat Budiman, S.S., M.Hum., Ph.D., expressed his highest appreciation for the award. In his remarks, he stated that as a state university, UT is not limited to providing open and distance education access alone but also actively participates in preserving the environment. This participation is crucial for ensuring a better life for future generations. He also emphasized that UT’s involvement in environmental conservation is a testament to its commitment to sustainability and its recognition of the interdependence between education and environmental stewardship. He highlighted that UT’s initiatives in creating green open spaces and engaging in collaborative environmental projects demonstrate the university’s dedication to making a positive impact locally and globally. This acknowledgement from PEPULIH serves as a motivation for UT to continue its efforts in promoting environmental awareness and actions among its community and beyond.
