In order to become a world class education institution by improving its education service quality, Indonesia Open University or Universitas Terbuka (UT) has invited Accreditation and Quality Assurance Institutes regularly and continually in order to conduct evaluation on all services provided. One effort to improve and ensure the quality of education services is to invite quality reviewers from the International Council for Open and Distance Education (ICDE). This year is the fourth times of the implementation of quality review by ICDE as it has been done before in the years of 2005, 2010, and 2016.
This year, ICDE’s Reviewers consist of Prof. Alan Tait (The Open University, UK), Prof. Ebba Ossiannilsson (Lund University, Sweden), and Prof. Shironica Priyanthi Karunanayaka (The Open University of Sri Lanka). ICDE has the duties to facilitate and provide assistance in implementing institutional quality review for UT. The review process will involve all the chairmen of UT, UT units and UPBJJ, all the writers of teaching materials and tutors as well as the students. The review would be conducted at UT Head Office, UPBJJ-UT Palembang, UPBJJ-UT Surakarta and UPBJJ-UT Manado for four days from 9 to 13 December 2019.
UT Rector, Prof. Ojat Darojat, M.Bus., Ph.D., said that UT has to face enormous challenges as the benchmark for distance universities in Indonesia. This included that UT is entrusted by the government to increase the number of its students to 1 million, as well as to develop Indonesia Cyber Education (ICE) Institute. With the review conducted by an international institute (ICDE), it is expected that it would encourage UT to continue to improve its education quality so it would become a world class’ higher education.
In that opportunity, Prof. Alan Tait expressed his gratitude for the trust given to ICDE to conduct the review of various services provided by UT. He added that in order to have good services, UT should improve its quality first. From the observation carried out on various fields or majors in several days, it is expected that the team of quality reviewers from ICDE would be able to give some inputs to help UT to maintain its quality and become an ODE University (PTTJJ) with world class quality.
