Toward Disaster Preparedness, UT Holds National Seminar on “Roles of Mathematics, Science, and Technology in Disasters”

For the purpose of building preparedness culture in dealing with disaster, Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) of Indonesian Open University (UT) held an Annual National Seminar of Mathematics, Sciences, and Technology, which is on “the Roles of Mathematics, Sciences, and Technology in Disasters”. In this activity, the results of collaboration between the academicians and local governments as well as strategic partners in developing innovative programs which are in line with the latest technology that may support the mitigation of disasters and post disasters handling.

Three main speakers in this seminar were Minister of Communication and Information Technology (Kominfo) who was represented by Prof. Dr. Ahmad M. Ramli S.H., M.H, FCBArb., Director General of Post and Information Technology Services, Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (Kemenkominfo), Prof. Ir. Dwikorita Karnawati M.Sc., Ph.D., Head of Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), and Dr. Ir. Surono, Geophysics and Vulcanology Expert, as well as Ir. Anak Agung Made Sastrawan Putra, M.A., Ed.D., the moderator. In the same opportunity, there were 55 presenters who presented their results of their researches in parallel discussion.

The event was opened officially by UT Rector, Prof. Ojat Darojat, M.Bus., Ph.D., and in his speech he appreciated the presenters to had contributed in the research and taken part in socializing preparedness culture for disaster. He added that education on disaster is needed in order to understand and know more about what are necessary to do at the time of disaster hoping that it may minimize the number of casualties.

At the same opportunity, Dr. Agus Santoso, M.Si. Dean of FST launched a book “the Roles of Mathematics, Sciences, and Technology in Disasters” that involves 9 writers.
