More than 3000 athletes competed in the 16th National Student Sports Week (POMNAS) in Jakarta. The national championship was opened on Thursday, September 19, 2019 at the Soemantri Brojonegoro Student Sports Center (GMSB). The event which takes place every 2 years this time competes 23 sports including e-sports.
6 Universitas Terbuka (UT) students competed in POMNAS 2019. Artha Sasta Sianturi, UT law student from Banda Aceh, joined the Pencak Silat branch of sport. Ni Made Putri Suwandewi who studied at UT English Literature, represented Jakarta competing in Cricket. Moh Syamsul Arifin from Jember, UT student of the English Literature study program, joined the Tarung Drajat branch. Aulia Gassani Putri Arindah competing in the Indoor Hockey branch is a UT student of the English Literature study program from Surabaya. Jeremy Jasson Evangelist from Jakarta, UT student of the Law study program, competed in the sport of Tennis Court. Ni Luh Ayu Cintya Purnama Dewi from Denpasar, who studied at the UT Management study program, represented the Bali contingent at the Cricket branch.
POMNAS was officially closed on 26 September 2019 in Padepokan Pencak Silat Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (TMII) by the Minister of Research, Technology and Higher Education Mohamad Nasir. He expressed his deepest gratitude to the participants and committees who successfully conducted the event. Pomnas which is held once every two years will be held next in West Sumatra in 2021.
With the spirit of sportsmanship, UT students won 3 POMNAS 2019 medals namely Ni Luh Ayu Cintya Purnama Dewi won 1st place (Gold Medal) Cricket Sports branch, Ni Made Putri Suwandewi won 2nd place (Silver medal) Cricket Sports branch, and Jeremy Jasson Evangelist won 3rd Place (Bronze medal) in Men's Doubles Field Tennis Sport.
UT students who took POMNAS 2019 showed that studying at UT did not prevent them from achieving achievements in sports. With an open distance education system, UT is the right choice for athletes who want to continue to tertiary education.
