Official Visit by UT’s Rector to South Korea


Indonesia Cyber Education Institute (ICE-I), established on 28 July 2021, is a consortium with its official members consisting of 13 higher education institutions and one association of Faculty of Economics and Business Indonesia. The Rector of Universitas Terbuka (UT), Prof. Ojat Darojat, M.Bus., Ph.D., was requested to serve as the Chairman of Consortium. Throughout its journey, ICE-I also recruits other universities which are worthy to become the members of course development team (MK) in ICE-I which is the market place for online university courses (MK daring) on MOOCs-based learning. One of the ICE-I’s responsibilities is to determine the standard for the course development and such online learning process alike.

On 1-4 November 2022, Prof. Ojat Darojat, together with thirty presenters attended the 35th annual conference of the Asian Association of Open Universities (AAOU) in Jeju, South Korea. This opportunity is welcomed by UT’s Rector who was accompanied by the Director of ICE-I, Prof. Dr. Paulina Pannen, M.Ls., in order to extend its presence in Seoul until 9 November for a number of agenda in his offical visit. UT’s Rector has the opportunity to visit UT students who live in South Korea on 6 November 2022, to be exact at UT Home in Ansan. In this opportunity, Rector was greeted by the student representatives in South Korea and he had the opportunity to virtually greet the students who took part in the tutorial webinar (tuweb). One of the students who was present was the awardee of  the Indonesian International Student Mobility Awards (IISMA) of Higher Education in 2022 which is currently pursuing his study in Korea University.

During their official trip from 6 to 8 November, UT’s Rector and Director of ICE-I together with their entourage, visited Korea National Open University (KNOU), Hanyang University, Seoul Cyber University (SCU), and National Institute for Lifelong Education (NILE). Also joining in such official visit, Dr. Zahid Majeed, one of the chief executive members of Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU), Pakistan which has long established collaboration with UT for more than 5 years.  The official visits to several universities in SOuth Korea is intended for sharing and learning on the online learning management and MOOCs in South Korea, as well as opening collaboration door for online university course exchange (transfer) with various higher education institutions in South Korea.

As we are aware, KNOU, as one of the objectives of the Rector’s visit, is a member of AAOU who has formed Online Test Center since 2020 and it has the innovative management and administration for online quality learning system and the innovative management of online quality university course (MK daring). Further, Hanyang University, one of the best universities in South Korea, has the management and good practices for MOOCs. Information and knowledge that the visited universities have need to be studied by ICE-I in order to improve its best services to their users.

The dynamics of the education in Indonesia has always been growing so rapidly on daily basis. In this regard, UT always continues to endevour to provide the best services, products, and system to all its takeholders throughout all its processes as Open and Distance Higher Education Institution or Perguruan Tinggi Terbuka dan Jarak Jauh (PTTJJ). UT’s commitment to improving the quality to operate Open Education or Pendidikan Jarak Jauh (PJJ) has no boundary. One of the concrete steps that UT has taken is to conduct the official trips, not only in Indonesia but also across the globe. Therefore, the knowledge and experience that UT gains may be aplied comprehensively.
