For the purpose of promoting the understanding and knowledge on System, Technology, and Management of the Distance Education Program for the lecturers, university students, and public, Indonesia Open University or Universitas Terbuka (UT) organized a series of activities on Knowledge Sharing Forum (KSF) at Indonesia Open University or Universitas Terbuka (UT) in 2020 virtually with a number of topics on Open, Online and Distance Learning. The 14th KSF programs of the series took the theme on “Building Hopes Through Nationalistic Viewpoints and Fair Distribution of Education Access” which was held on Friday (13/11/2020). The participants who registered in such KSF activity was 2,266 people who consist of lecturers, teachers, educators, university students, and public participants, both domestic and international.
The 14th KSF presented two speakers. The main speaker was the Governor of National Defense Institute of the Republic of Indonesia or Lembaga Ketahanan Nasional Republik Indonesia (LEMHANAS RI), Lieutenant General TNI (Ret) Agus Widjojo and the Chairman of the Senate Council of Indonesia Open University or Universitas Terbuka (UT), Prof. Dr. Chanif Nurcholis, M.Si. and the program was convened by Director of the Center for the Development of International Relations and Partnership of Indonesia Open University or Pusat Pengembangan Hubungan Internasional dan Kemitraan Universitas Terbuka (UT), Dr. Sri Sediyaningsih, M.Si.
The program started with the keynote speech by the Rector of Indonesia Open University or UT, Prof. Ojat Darojat, M.Bus., Ph.D. In his remarks, UT’s Rector addressed that Indonesia Open University or Universitas Terbuka which currently has 1.8 millions of alumni can also be referred to as the fence of the nation (pagar bangsa) and needs to instill the values of the nationalism, which emphasize on the unity and oneness in our life as a society, nation, and state. It is expected that with the knowledge provided in such 14th KSF, university students of the Indonesia Open University or Universitas Terbuka (UT) and other participants would gain deeper understanding and insights particularly on the subject.
The materials presented by Lieutenant General TNI (Ret) Agus Widjojo conveyed that, fundamentally, the true meaning of nationalistic viewpoints, nationalism, is the ways of comprehensive viewing for the national interests, which means that each citizen and state apparatuses need to think, behave, and act comprehensively within the scope of the national interests. Nationalism or nationalistic viewpoints are aimed to form strong, robust, highly competitive and prosperous people and nation. The realization of the nationalistic viewpoints shall be transformed in concrete forms that can be enjoyed by all together, which is the national development. Therefore, the national human resources would also become the focal attention in improving national competitiveness, particularly in dealing with globalization era and global competition.
Further materials were presented by Prof. Dr. Chanif Nurcholis, M.Si. He addressed that the nationalism that we have adhered to is that the people wishes to build their future all together despite their differences (ethnics, religions, and races), and still, we also build friendships with other peoples and nations. In the implementation of the nationalistic viewpoints, Indonesia Open University or Universitas Terbuka (UT) also contributes in creating the culture of nationalism, which is to provide open and distance education that can be accessed throughout the country up to the most remote areas. Indonesia Open University or Universitas Terbuka (UT) not only provides the materials on sciences, technology and humanities, but also extends the knowledge or studies on religions, ideology pancasila, civics, and nationalism which are aimed at creating noble university students throughout Indonesia who would love the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI) and wish to make earnest sacrifices to defend it.
